Hospices and palliative care units, especially in the UK, have large volunteer teams to give help to the staff and enhance the environment of the organiz- ation.
This period should extend over the first three or four months and it is a most important time because it is often found that people who volunteer for a palliative care unit do not really know how they will react to the environment.
However, in most palliative care units and hospices where volunteer numbers are large this is not always possible or practicable.
Many hospices and some palliative care units are run on a charitable basis and care must be taken, when 'entertaining' volunteers or rewarding them for their efforts, that the events which are held are not extravagant.
Some palliative care units and hospices recognize special birthdays, anniversaries, and the retirement dates of retired volunteers by sending cards or even flowers.
